GIFT OF LAND – Majengo distric government

•January 2012, the local district government approved a gift of 6-8 acres of wide, open land, to the Majengo project – about 3 miles down the road from our current location. At the base of the plot, the government is building a brand new primary school with four classrooms.
SOCCER FIELD – Majengo gives back
As you can see in the drawing below, Majengo has planned to include a big soccer field on the gifted land. The soccer field will divide the new Majengo facility from the government primary school – a gift back to the people who live in the  Majengo district for welcoming us so generously into their community.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN - ZEIDLER FAMILY CONTRIBUTION:
•October, 2011 Majengo team visited two established Tanzanian orphanages to begin the groundwork: the wonderful facilities of  Rift Valley Children’s Village in Kiratu and JBFC, a near Mwanza on Lake Victoria.
•January, 2012 Canadian architect Margie Zeidler volunteered for a month at Majengo, to donate her expertise and develop a conceptual design for the new Majengo orphanage. She revisited the two established orphanages, and worked alongside our local ICA Tanzanian project director Charles Luoga, interviewing staff, government engineers, and the Majengo children, to learn firsthand what our Majengo community wants for their orphanage.
•March 2012: Margie and her father Eberhard Zeidler presented full concept design to Majengo US and Canadian boards  in Toronto. First draft: a dining hall to feed over 100 kids,  an outdoor kitchen, a library with one half for books and DVDs, the other, computers; 4 great designs for houses – each with its own vegetable garden and courtyard filled with flowers and climbing vines, a preschool with two classrooms, an infirmary, an office, a playground filled with swings, slides and climbing things, a community soccer field – an outdoor laundry and even a goat project. Fabulous!

•April 2012, Margie Zeidler returned to Majengo to finalize the conceptual design. She will be talking in further depth with the Majengo community about design, visiting additional sites with an eye to the use of local materials, meeting with government engineers re Tanzanian building requirements, and interviewing builders with Charles Luoga to determine who will be awarded the project.

OVERSEEING THE PROJECT
•Majengo is fortunate that ICA’s Charles Luoga, our excellent project coordinator, is also a fully qualified engineer. In addition to his other responsibilities, Charles has enthusiastically agreed to take on the job of overseeing the building of the new facility and is perfectly situated to do so, given his knowledge of Majengo’s needs and of the local environment along with his technical engineering expertise.

LEGAL:
• Big thanks to Philadelphia lawyer Steve Salvo of Salvo Rogers and Elinski for giving his time and legal expertise toward making sure the children and our future Majengo home is protected.  Salvo and our Tanzanian lawyers are working together to obtain a land survey and secure the legal title of the donated land, to ensure that we, as donors, have legal ownership and control of buildings and land usage for as long as Majengo is in operation.
